Atelier Melbourne Art Academy intends to provide learning methods to substantially enhance your Art making skill level. Our course structure will introduce students to the classical methods of training in the visual arts, enriching your visual language and providing skills and methods that can be applied to other art styles and practices as well. Instruction by individual critique and demonstrations from Beginning – Intermediate – Advanced levels

Weekday Program

10 week term.  Every week Monday to Thursday.  Tutoring will start with the copying old master drawings to understand measurement, proportion and shadow shape. Students will progress through drawing from the plaster cast, to painting the cast, painting still life, and finally the portrait. They will practice using pencil, charcoal and oil. With pencil there will be a linear approach focusing on outline and shadow line to explain the form. With charcoal and oil paint, the focus will be on achieving a convincing sense of volume, light and atmosphere through the use of light and shadow.

Program Curriculum

Beginner - Level 1

Bargue Drawing, master copies using graphite and charcoal, Drawing from life, simple casts using Charcoal and white chalk, Beginners Figure Drawing from life size casts

Intermediate - Level 2

Drawing complex casts using Charcoal and white chalk, Beginning painting, life casts, simple to complex grisaille method- Limited palette and Advanced Figure Drawing from life 

Advanced Level 3

Still life painting – Full palette, Painting Master copy portraits – Full palette, Portrait drawing and painting from life, Figure Painting from Life, intermediate to advanced

Final outcome

At the completion of all three levels, successful students will be able to use their drawing skills and painting technique to correctly transpose the subject’s outline, proportion and shadow shapes. Students will be able to achieve a sense of reality using drawing, values, colour, sense of light, atmosphere and space.
At the end of the program, students should be able to paint a believable and aesthetic painting.
