Skull & Portrait sculpting from Casts / Life

2024 program TBC

Tutor : Georgina Mills

Cost $TBC, Course structure:

Over a 5 day intensive workshop students will learn the fundamentals of sculpting the portrait. For the first 3 - 4 sessions students will start with sculpting from a cast of a human skull. This is an important study in understanding the basic structure of the portrait. This exercise also introduces the students to a sculptural method of working from a profile to find and place depth as well as finding and placing points of reference accurately. From this, using the skull exercise as a base, students will then start sculpting portrait from the life model .
Throughout the workshop demonstrations of the various steps of sculpting the skull and portrait including basic anatomical landmarks and how to break down and place the individual features will be given. Students will also receive regular individualised critiques to help guide them through the process of sculpting a portrait in clay.
On the last day students can attempt the hollowing out their clay portrait as an exercise for firing in the Kiln. Extra time may need to be given to this exercise. Students can then take their sculpture home and fire in a local kiln at their own cost and convenience (details will be provided of local kilns available). Please note that when preparing for and firing in a kiln can have unpredictable outcomes.
